Improve Lecturer Teaching Skills with Case-Based Teaching
Lately, the teaching system using the lecture method has begun to be less applied in universities. Moreover, cases that occur around the community can be used as teaching materials in teaching and learning activities. Of course, learning that applies this case study method will be more interesting because it involves lecturers and students when solving cases. This is what is currently being implemented by STIE Perbanas Surabaya teachers when delivering material to students.
In order to improve the skills and knowledge of lecturers while teaching with the case study method, the Master of Management Study Program at STIE Perbanas Surabaya held a Case Base Teaching Workshop. Located in the Seminar Room Campus 1 of STIE Perbanas Surabaya, this workshop was attended by a number of lecturers and was held for two days, to be precise on Monday and Tuesday (1-2 / 8).
Assistant Head of Academic Affairs STIE Perbanas Surabaya, Dr. Emanuel Kristijadi, MM., In his speech conveyed that learning using the case study method is very good to be applied because later students will be more active and create an interactive learning atmosphere.
On this occasion, the instructors who were presented were Andi Ilham Said, M.S.O.M., Ph.D. and Martinus Sulistio Rusli, MBA., Ph.D. from PPM School of Management Jakarta. Being the first management education institution in the country, of course, has qualified experience to produce knowledge about management, especially related to case study-based learning methods.
According to Andi Ilham Said, M.S.O.M., Ph.D., this training is full skill development so that it can improve lecturers' teaching skills. In the master management study program, this case study learning method is more suitable because it is close to applications in companies and communities. So, students already know the form of science application from the cases being studied.
"The cases used are real cases that have been experienced by certain companies or people. We can reflect on some cases from the experiences of others. Learning that is applied is identical to discussion. Learning objectives are very dependent on the dynamics of class discussions. With the case method, students participate in thinking, analyzing, arguing, arguing, and questioning. This achievement will make the students' memory endurance last longer because it uses many of the five senses. The learning atmosphere is also livelier when compared to the usual lectures, ”he explained.
Meanwhile, Martinus Sulistio Rusli, MBA., Ph.D., assessed that the workshop which involved STIE Perbanas Surabaya lecturers was very full of power. "Even though the case presented is simple, the presentation and delivery of the material by the lecturers is very powerful so it makes us even more enthusiastic. "Ethical attitudes in accounting, finance, and business must be applied," he added.
Head of the Master of Management Study Program, Prof. Dr. Tatik Suryani, MM., Hopes that the lecturers will later be able to apply the case study learning method for students. "After this, the plan is to hold a case-making workshop as a follow-up in the near future so that the learning process at STIE Perbanas Surabaya, especially in MM study program, will be better," he hoped.
