Utilizing E-Rumbel, UHW Perbanas Enhances English Language Competence for Children in Surabaya
Rumah Belajar (Rumbel) Akbar has collaborated with Hayam Wuruk Perbanas University to enhance foreign language competence, particularly in English, for children in the Kedungturi II RT 02 RW 08 Tegalsari area of Surabaya. They are taught English language skills starting from the basic level using various learning methods.
Kartika Marta Budiana, S.S., M.Pd., the Chair of the UHW Perbanas Faculty's Community Service Team, stated that post-COVID-19 pandemic, students at Rumbel Akbar faced difficulties in understanding learning materials, especially for English subjects. "The English proficiency of the children there is below the class average. The children are not interested in attending Rumbel Akbar to learn English because the teaching methods are still lecture-based and lack interactive teaching aids," Marta explained on Monday, (February 13).
Marta further explained that their team came to offer a solution by implementing offline learning methods and utilizing information technology. "Children can still easily learn with the help of gadgets. However, they are still under the supervision of UHW Perbanas volunteer teachers," she added.
From a technological perspective, the UHW Perbanas Faculty's Team implements English language teaching methods using audiovisual and digital means. "If at any time the students forget, they can review the English language learning materials using gadgets. Moreover, English education at Rumbel Akbar is conducted privately," she detailed.
In addition, Rumbel Akbar has updated its learning process by utilizing e-Rumbel accessed through the website https://sites.google.com/view/rumahbelajarakbar. Hariadi Yutanto, S.Kom., M.Kom., the IT Program Coordinator at UHW Perbanas, explained that the e-Rumbel media available is used for accessing materials, completing assignments, and practicing tasks that students can do at home. "A range of materials delivered during offline sessions can still be accessed by children at home. Furthermore, parents also play a crucial role in motivating their children to learn at Rumbel AKBAR and at home," he concluded. (PR)
