Undergraduate Students of UHW Perbanas' Sharia Economics Program Win 1st Place at Sharia National Essay Competition

A team of undergraduate students from the Sharia Economics Program, Faculty of Economics and Business, has brought honor to Universitas Hayam Wuruk Perbanas by securing 1st place in the Sharia National Essay Competition SEE X JEIF 2024. This prestigious national competition saw three UHW Perbanas students rise to the top: Achmad Ahdan Sahali, Ni’matun Amalah, and Siti Lutfiyah Rukmana.
When contacted after receiving the award, Achmad Ahdan Sahali expressed immense gratitude for the achievement, shared with his fellow Sharia Economics students at UHW Perbanas. He noted that the competition coincided with the team’s work on their thesis proposals, forcing them to balance their time and focus between two crucial tasks.
“In addition, there was pressure as we were the only private university in the final round. However, through hard work, we made time for presentation rehearsals, prepared for potential questions from the judges, and even planned our attire, all while accompanied by prayers. This helped us achieve the best possible result,” he said.
The essay that led them to victory was titled BASAMADAS: Waste Management Based on Maqashid Sharia as a Form of Social and Environmental Empowerment. The key issue addressed was waste management and poverty. Sahali and his team offered a solution through the BASAMADAS (Smart Community Waste Bank) concept.
"This is a waste management system that applies Islamic philanthropy, where the proceeds from the sale of products will be donated to BAZNAS (National Amil Zakat Agency) for economic empowerment programs. Four programs will be implemented: Z-Mart, Z-Chicken, Z-Auto, and the Zakat Micro Bank," Sahali explained.
The competition journey began in mid-July with registration, followed by the announcement of abstract acceptance in August. In September, their full paper was accepted, and on October 5, 2024, eight teams competed in the presentation stage. The event concluded on October 6, 2024, with an awards ceremony and an international seminar.
Looking ahead, Sahali and his team are preparing for similar competitions elsewhere. They hope to continue achieving excellence and inspire their peers to pursue new achievements that will make their university proud.
This national Sharia Economics competition was organized by the Sharia Economics Student Association and the Islamic Economics Study Group of the Faculty of Economics and Business at Universitas Jember. (pr)
