Students from Hayam Wuruk Perbanas University have successfully transformed pencils into environmentally friendly and beneficial products. Led by Rezha Tri Damayanti, Nur Alfi Mei Yundari D., and Ferdiansyah, these students innovatively enhanced ordinary pencils by incorporating plant seeds. Their pencil product, named PECO SMART, has already produced 70 packages and been distributed both offline and online.

Rezha Tri Damayanti explained that the idea for PECO SMART arose from her concern about disposable pencils. Typically used and discarded, these pencils can now be enhanced with plant seeds enclosed in capsules that can be planted in pots.

"Usually, pencils are only for writing and once they're too short, they're thrown away. But PECO SMART pencils can be planted. This creates a sustainable cycle," explained Rezha, a Management undergraduate at UHW Perbanas.

Rezha further elaborated that PECO SMART currently offers four types of plant seed variants: chili, eggplant, basil, and tomato. Each seed capsule is an integral part of the pencil.

"So, at the end of the pencil, there's a capsule containing plant seeds. When planted, they grow just like when gardening," she clarified.

PECO SMART is priced at Rp 25,000 per package, which includes 2 pencils measuring 15 cm each, a Mini Shovel, a pot, planting medium fertilizer, and an educational brochure. The goal is to inform buyers about the benefits of PECO SMART and educate the public about gardening.

Through PECO SMART, Rezha invites the wider community to choose environmentally friendly products. Currently, their plan includes partnering with elementary school students to introduce PECO SMART and its benefits.

"We began distributing this product in mid-June. Our goal is to encourage people to enjoy gardening. Additionally, PECO SMART can serve as an educational tool alongside its writing utility," she concluded.
